The Temazcal as Womb, Temple and Threshold In the prehispanic Mexica worldview, the Temazcal is not a sweat lodge, not a therapy, and not a ritual bath. It is the womb of Mother Earth — Toci / Tonantzin, the Grandmother who births and devours all forms.

The word Temazcalli comes from:

Temaz: steam, sacred vapor, vital breath

Calli: house, space, dwelling

The Temazcal is therefore the House of Steam, where life-force, memory, and consciousness are awakened through heat, darkness, water, and prayer. To enter the Temazcal is to return to the origin — to die symbolically so that life may be renewed.
