The Egyptians fostered a very intense form of death cult because they were of the belief that the soul (Egypt. Ba) and consciousness (Egypt. Ka) frequently returned to the world of the living in attempt to guard and guide them. To hold the power of the soul and consciousness up eternally\, the Egyptians erected shrines (so-called House-of-the-Ka) and mortuary temples\, wherein they performed prayers and ceremonies over several dynasties. The mortuary cults for deceased kings were particularly costly and long-lasting. Early private tombs of the first four dynasties contained so-called slab stelas with the stylized depiction of the deceased\, sitting on an offering table. The stela also presented inscriptions with the name and title of the deceased\, together with lists of offering food and grave goods the deceased could magically use in the otherworld. Private tombs (especially mastabas) contained also so-called false doors\, of which the Egyptians believed that the Ba\, Ka and shadow of the deceased could use false doors as a portal between the world of living and the world of the dead. Additionally\, in later times the Egyptians erected so-called Ka-statues with the name of the deceased on the base. Royal statues were richly decorated and oversized and every day mortuary priests performed ritual purifications on these Ka-statues.[3] \nThe ancient Egyptians believed in life after death and that the body was needed to house the Ba and shadow\, whenever they would visit the world of the living. Thus\, they used elaborate mummification and embalming techniques to preserve the body eternally. The special house for embalming was called in early times “where life endures”\, in later dynasties it was called “beautiful house”. At first\, the deceased was washed\, shaved and then prepared for the “opening the body”. Embalmers made a cut in the left side of the torso to remove internal organs\, the only organ left in the body was the heart. All removed organs were burnt in early times\, from the late Old Kingdom onward the embalmers dried and put them in special vessels called canopic jars. The brain of the deceased was destroyed\, removed and discarded\, because the Egyptians didn’t know the functions and importance of the brain. The body was then covered in natron salts to absorb all moisture. After 40 days\, the flesh would shrink\, and the skin would darken\, leaving only hair\, skin and bones. The dried body cavity was stuffed with resins\, sawdust and/or linen to give and keep shape. The whole body was then wrapped in many layers of linen bandages. During the process\, priests placed magical protective amulets between the linen layers. The entire mummification process took about 70 days.[4] \nLUXOR \nLuxor temple is not dedicated to a cult god or a deified version of the pharaoh in death. Write the name of the person you’re thinking of on the paper three times in succession. Next\, rotate the paper 90 degrees and write your own three times in succession\, overlapping the letters with the letters of the other person’s name. This next part is crucial: create a clear intention. Whether you’re looking to improve your romantic relationship; wanting to reconcile a long lost friendship; or even trying to improve your relationships with co-workers\, be clear about your intended outcome. \nNext\, write down your intention – be careful here\, because you need to write it out in a circle without lifting your pen. Writing in cursive is helpful for this step but not required. Once you’ve written the full intention out in a circle around both of your names\, you can go back to add the little dot to your i’s and cross your t’s. This list should include your direct ancestors\, that is\, your biological mother and father\, and their biological mothers and fathers\, and so on. You may also include other ancestors\, including anyone who nurtured you for a significant length of time\, especially when you were a child. \nObtain a white candle. This can be any kind of candle: a glass-encased seven-day candle from a grocery store\, a shabbat candle\, a tea light. It can even be scented or electric\, if that’s what you have on hand. Along with the candle\, get a nice loaf of unsliced bread and a bottle of either wine or spring water\, depending on what you like to drink. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFast for at least an hour. Then\, take your candle to a quiet place in your home. The kitchen or the dining room are ideal\, and if you need to wait until the evening for the bustle of day to calm down in those areas\, it will be worth it. Serve some of the drink to anyone who is joining you\, and to yourself. You can drink out of individual cups\, or a shared cup\, or even pass the bottle around\, depending on what kind of a mood you’re in. \nRelax and enjoy the gentle glow of the candle. Some people see shapes when they gaze at a candle for a long period of time. Perhaps you will see something in the flame or the melted wax\, or perhaps a strange thought will occur to you unlike any you have had before. Whatever you see or feel is appropriate. Write it in your journal or share it with your companions. \nThe Art of Receiving What You Are Getting Between participants \nIn Sanskrit\, the word diksa means initiation. It usually refers to the teachings passed on from a guru to a student. New York yoga teacher Eric Stoneberg explains\, however\, that diksa can also mean receiving \n\n\n\n\n\n\nwhat you get: a student can never absorb 100% of what a teacher is saying in exactly the way the teacher intends. The teachings take on some new flavor in our minds and bodies\, and we can only keep what lands. No one can give us anything we can’t receive ourselves. \nI’ve been thinking about this concept of receiving in other areas of my life lately as well. My life doesn’t necessarily look the way I wanted it to\, say\, when I set my intentions for the year on my last birthday. One year\, I wrote down with confidence that I would publish an article in a prominent magazine. I didn’t get anywhere near that goal—but I wrote a book\, which was a lifelong dream I hadn’t written down. If I overfocus on what didn’t happen\, I miss the part where I get to enjoy what did. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe authors suggest offering something you have to give—companionship\, listening\, helping with childcare\, cooking a meal\, sending flowers—whatever feels genuine for you. You never know what might help. If we are the ones suffering\, we can sometimes feel frustrated and isolated when the things we need are not coming to us from our friends and family.
